Rio Grande do Sul, South Region, Brazil

Here is a very fine Amethyst Cathedral Geode standing 5 feet 10 inches tall and filled with sparkling lustrous terminated Amethyst crystals. There are also three clusters of cream colored scalenohedral Calcite crystals. Actually a few more smaller Calcite clusters nested within the top tip of the Cathedral. Many of the Amethyst crystals are filled with inclusions of golden needles of another mineral. I believe these are Cacoxenite, an aluminum iron phosphate which crystalizes in beautiful golden acicular crystal sprays. It is hard to imagine that these Cathedrals were actually gas pockets in the basalt flows. After the basalt hardened, solutions seeped in and the Amethyst crystalized in darkness until exposed by Brazilian quarry workers hunting for these ancient gas pockets trapped in the ancient Brazilian Basalt flows. This would make an excellent eye catching decorator piece for an entryway or living room.
