This is
gallery of the rare and newly described mineral Barahonaite-(Al). This
was an unknown blue mineral from Gold Hill for the past 30 years. Work to
get it described was delayed, started, and delayed again. Meanwhile, while
the work to get it described at Gold Hill was delayed, it was also found at
Murcia, Spain. The work to get it described was not delayed at the Spanish
location and so it became the type location instead of Gold Hill. The
Delores Prospect, Murcia, Spain and Gold Hill, Tooele County, Utah are the only
known locations. A few months prior to Gold Hill being permanently closed
and sealed with heavy iron jail like bars, an area in the mine bearing the
rare mineral was located and several flats were collected. Otherwise only
a handful of specimens would ever have been available from Gold Hill.
Still with the location being permanently closed to any further collecting,
quantities are extremely limited compared to most mineral locations. The formula is (Ca, Cu, Na, Fe3+,Al)12Al2(AsO4)8(OH,Cl)x.nH2O Specimens consist of light blue spheres of monoclinic microcrystals. May 2008 |
