16dobcis  ((PYRITE)),   $10 MINIMUM BID, Bingham Canyon Mine, Salt Lake County, Utah, 3.5 x 3.5 x 3 cm, Miniature,

Here is a Pyrite pyritahedral crystal from Bingham Canyon Mine, Salt Lake City's famous huge open pit Copper mine.  These floater completely formed crystals were discovered at the mine in 2010.  Some have flat faces and others have hoppered or indented faces.  Average size 2 to 5 cm across.  Some workers collected them although the company policy is no collecting by the employees.  They were hard to acquire from the employees for many years.  This weekend I was able to acquire some from an employee recently layed off from the mine struggling from lower quality ore and the huge major slide a couple of years ago filling in a large area of the pit hindering mining the higher grade ore. This specimen is a complete pyritahedral crystal. Some crystal have flat lustrous faces and other crystals have irregular not quite hoppered, but irregular indent crystal surfaces. Combining that with many crystals have a indented striated contact where they were attached to another crystal, its hard to actually see any real damage. I am thinking that actual damage have the characteristic of a concoidal surface. This specimen has only two small areas of concoical surfaces. Most of the irregular surface is either irregular growth or contacting. It does have a partial pyritahedral displayable group of about 6 faces.
