mc 4 specimens SULVANITE, Thorpe Hills, Mecur District, Tooele County, Utah, largest is 2 x 2 x 1 cm, | |
Here are 4 specimens which are thumbnail sized of the rare mineral Sulvanite which is a Copper Vanadium Sulfide. They occur as metallic gray cubes in a matrix of opaque white Calcite. The oxidation product is green. They are readily spotted by the greenish stain in the Calcite surrounding the Sulvanite crystals. The problem is that it is hard to remove the Calcite from the crystals, or crystals on matrix. Typical etching with hydrochloric acid also etches/ burns the Sulvanite crystals. ex Mel Cannon collection, collected by Phil Richardson (see Utah volume of Rocks and Minerals). |
