Here is a specimen of Calcite with undamaged flattened rhombs. Bottom has Palygorskite, aka Mountain Leather clinging to the underside of the Calcite. Palygorskite is an amphibole species that looks and feels like chamois or soft leather.  ex Dennis McMurdie collection.
