600420ewshis   ((CALCITE, SCHEELITE)), FLUORESCENT, $60 MINIMUM BID, Ophir Hill Mine (Ophir), Ophir Hill area, Ophir District, Tooele County, Utah,  9 x 7 x 5 cm,  Cabinet,

Undamaged Stacked flattened rhombs of fluorescnet Calcite from Ophir.  These Ophir Hill Calcites with the stacked rhombs are uncommon to rare in undamaged specimens.  Most collected are damaged and dinged.  This is the Calcite that is typically dissolved to expose the highly desired fluorescent Scheelite crystals and uncommon specimens of Bournonite and Tetrahedrite. Not much if any attention had been given to preserving undamaged Calcite specimens.  Only a few undamaged seem to have survived. I just put the UV light on to check for Scheelite, fluorescing bright blue white and guess what?  There is an excellent layer of Scheelite crystals under the Calcite and also on the under side of the knob at the top of the specimen.  The Calcite could be totally removed by etching with HCl.  I will take some photos of the fluorescent also showing the red orange Calcite.  Also selective etching produces very very desirable specimens with both Scheelite and Calcite fluorescing such as this one is naturally already that way.   Collected in the late 80's to early 90's by Solon Hammack a prominent Utah field collector in the 80's.  ex Solon Hammack collection.
