kmt  MAGNETITE and BYSSOLITE, Grace Mine, Morgantown, Berks County, Pennsylvania, 12 x 12 x 5.5 cm, Large Cabinet

Grace Mine was operated by Bethlehem Steel Company back in the 1960's and the 1970's for Iron. Low Japanese steel prices eventually closed the mine and it was sealed. The land has since been sold to investors whom have partially developed the land with a trash incinerator to burn Philadelphia's trash. It is located right off the Pennsylvania turnpike for easy access. I was able to pick up a small suite of 6 large handsize examples of some of the minerals from this Pennsylvania location that once produced Iron. This specimen is a combination of Magnetite and Byssolite (Actinolite). The backside is sawn to show the growth pattern of Actinolite around the Magnetite. There is also a separate 1 to 1.5 cm slab that goes with the specimen. 2 PIECES
