NEW MINERAL

POSTITE, PARADOX VALLEY DISTRICT, PARADOX VALLEY, SAN JUAN COUNTY, UTAH


These are specimens from the new mineral, POSTITE.  Postite's chemical formula is Mg(H2O)6Al2(OH)2(H2O)8(V10O28)·13H2O and was recently named.  There are 3 photos on www.mindat.org  http://www.mindat.org/gallery.php?min=42268 .  The crystals are micro with the mindat photos having a field of view of 1 mm and taken with a microscope.  I believe that collecting has been limited at best.  I was able to acquire 30 specimens from a local collector last year before the work on the description for the new mineral was complete.  The District but not the actual mine was given.  I can probably find which mine of the two given on mindat that these are from.     December 2011

JOE MARTY POINTS OUT THAT MICRO MINERAL SPECIES ARE EXTREMELY HARD TO IDENTIFY EVEN WITH A 120 X MICROSCOPE.  TO BE TOTALLY CONFIDENT ON A SPECIMEN ANALYSIS MUST DONE AND EVEN THAT DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT ALL THE MINERALS ON THE SPECIMEN ARE THAT SPECIES.  JOE ALSO POINTS OUT THE PARADOX VALLEY IS IN COLORADO AND NOT IN UTAH AND THAT MINDAT THAT I USED AS REFERENCE IS NOT CORRECT.

These Postite specimens are from the Black Hat Mine.  Mindat lists the Postite locations as Paradox Valley District which is incorrect.  It is the La Sal District. The type location is the Vanadium Queen Mine and a second location is the Blue Cap Mine.  Photos and this third location will probably be added to mindat in the future. These were collected at the Black Hat Mine about two years ago prior to being described which was finished and approved as a new mineral only recently.  The Black Hat Mine has since been sealed by the state of Utah.  Specimens collected from the Black Hat Mine had EDS Analysis which confirmed that Mg Al and V present.  I believe Postite presently is the only Vanadium species with Aluminum present.       January 2012
